STORYLINE:
A South African conservation unit is marking World Elephant Day on Tuesday by showcasing its work to protect and study the animals.
The Rory Hensman Conservation & Research Unit runs an interactive facility where visitors can meet elephants, learn about their biology and behaviour and hear about the threats they face.
Director Sean Hensman says the aim is to create a personal connection between people and elephants while also advancing research.
“We tell them everything from their tail to their trunk and everything in between,” he said.
The team also conducts trials of anti-poaching technologies and develops solutions to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
“The idea is to learn as much as we can about the elephants and then utilize what we’ve learned to help humanity as well as obviously elephants and conservation,” said Hensman.
The Elephant Care Association of Southern Africa works alongside such facilities to promote best practice.
Chief Operating Officer Andrea Bouwer said they train staff in safe handling and welfare standards to ensure elephants receive the best possible treatment.
