STORYLINE:
A photography exhibition of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, taken by his son and displayed in the iconic Revolution Square, started the celebrations for the centenary of the bearded leader’s birth — who would have turned 99 on Wednesday — and who left explicit instructions that there should be no cult of personality around him.

The 50 images are by Alex Castro, and the exhibition is titled “All the Glory of the World.”

Although it is now open to the public, its opening was held privately on Monday night, with several family members in attendance.

The photographs of the former president, who was born in eastern Cuba in 1926, mainly show him in the last years of his life, when he retired due to illness in 2006, leaving the power he had held since the triumph of the revolution in 1959.

We see an older Castro, less formal many times wearing sportswear and checked shirts.

He is sitting in his living room or other more private spaces, but always surrounded by prominent figures, especially allies like Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and his Argentine counterpart Cristina Fernández, whom he received informally.

The official Cubadebate website said the exhibition will kick off a year of celebrations honoring the leader, leading up to August 13, 2026, the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The former leader died on November 25, 2016, and explicitly instructed that his name should not be associated with public places or worshipped as a personality cult.

Loved and hated, with fierce supporters and detractors, Castro shaped the history of the 20th century, especially in Latin America, by putting the small Caribbean island on the world geopolitical map through leading a revolution that challenged the hegemonic power of the United States just miles from its shores.

He even became a key figure in the October Crisis of 1962, when, as a result of the confrontation between the United States and Russia—whose ally Castro was—the world came closer than ever to nuclear war.

He also endured Washington’s harshest sanctions against a country, including an embargo that is still in place and has been tightened over the past five years.

The process he led in Cuba and his ideas inspired hundreds of thousands of people, especially across the continent and within left-wing movements in recent decades.
