STORYLINE:
About 3,000 firefighters continued to battle a series of wildfires across Portugal on Wednesday as fires intensified across southern Europe.
More than 700 firefighters were deployed to control a fire in the municipality of Trancoso, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northeast of Lisbon.
The blaze started on the weekend and intensified due to strong winds and high temperatures.
The country is under a state of alert until Friday in light of the extreme risk of wildfires.
Firefighting resources were stretched thin in many affected countries as they battled multiple outbreaks following weeks of heat waves and temperature spikes across the Mediterranean region.
