STORYLINE:
Crowds cheered on as engineless cars raced downhill, flew over jumps and – in some cases – crashed into barriers at a soapbox race held in the Paraguayan town of San Bernardino on Sunday.
More than 50 vehicles equipped with roll bars and colorful exteriors sped down the large hill in a spectacle to test even the most daring drivers.
While the cars don’t have engines, they are fitted with seat belts, brakes and the drivers must wear helmets.
The cars are as unique as the drivers.
"My machine is recycled from pieces of pipes. I have recycled motorcycle pieces, all handmade steering wheels," said driver Sebastian Cañete whose car was pink and in the shape of a pig.
Crowds cheered when the wacky racers crossed the finish line or when the cartoonish-looking vehicles toppled over.
