"So this report is about a change in taxonomy or the nomenclature of the giraffe and okapi. And obviously taxonomy is very important. It tells us about specific species. So for conservation, the work that we do, it is imperative. It is very key that when we say that is the Maasai giraffe, everyone in conservation means that. Threats to it can be identified and what needs to be done to avert those threats can be identified specific to that species."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Philip Muruthi, vice president for species conservation and science at the African Wildlife Foundation:
"When you have got the separate species and the analysis that has gone into this, this may invoke more attention and more urgent action. So for example, if a particular species was a subspecies of a larger group, that was not critically endangered but say of a special attention or a special concern, action was not specifically targeted to that subspecies. Now that it has full species status and a revision of what is causing endangerment, more action will be taken quickly."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Philip Muruthi, vice president for species conservation and science at the African Wildlife Foundation:
"Right now, the key threat to giraffes as with other large species in Africa is habitat loss. But in places like Kenya, Tanzania, we have noticed that there is a lot of poaching. Now one key point to make is whereas habitat loss and fragmentation is one of the key threats, poaching follows that but also lack of incentives for communities, lack of employment, people then turn to species. The other point that I wanted to make is that all these threats work together synergistically to make the overall threat to species even greater."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Philip Muruthi, vice president for species conservation and science at the African Wildlife Foundation:
"It will prioritize those that are critically endangered so that the threat in decline can be reversed. It will also be very important even for those that are relatively common to keep them that way or even improve them. The base analysis will tell what actions will need to be taken and often those include saving space, creating incentives, partnerships, saving the species from if it is trade, poaching. So funding should come in a greater way because now we have greater information. We must take this information from being technical information and socialize it with donors, socialize it with countries so that global analysis can be taken to countries that are range states but also to donors because it is only that way we can have action and increased benefits."
