4. SOUNDBITE (English) Chuck Jettmar, U.S. Tennis Association:
“The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center here in New York is the home of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, which is an outdoor sporting event. The facility itself is entirely equipped with LED event lights. We have a light that’s shaped like a wedge, and that wedge is a big part of what aims the lighting and makes it most efficient. So there’s minimal spillage, there’s minimal spillage outside of the playing area, and there’s minimal spillage outside into the park.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) James Brigagliano, DarkSky International:
“We’re not looking to plunge the world into medieval times with no light. We just want better quality of lighting. Is the light useful? Is it targeted? Is it low level? Is it controlled, and is it a warmer color? The most important thing is to not have the light source be brighter than it needs to be, and to have it shielded so you don’t see the actual source, you just see the light lighting surfaces.”

“The task is not necessarily to get rid of all artificial light, but rather to use it more thoughtfully and selectively so that we can strike a good balance between getting the benefits of being able to see, but then mitigating the risks that all of that extra light has for humans and animals and the environment.”
