"Today marks the one-year birthday of Leni and Lotti here, and for this occasion, they’ve been given a small climbing structure that’s been decorated a bit more nicely than usual, along with some ice bombs and so on. That’s why they’re relatively active today, as they’re spending more time playing with and showing interest in the new items offered than they usually would. So, in that sense, it’s a bit of luck for us, and it’s enjoyable to watch them respond so well. It’s not the case with all enrichment activities, one must admit."

STORYLINE:
A large, red wooden number one, lots of beetroot and carrot juice ice cream balls, and a bamboo birthday candle — this is how panda twins Leni and Lotti celebrated their first birthday at Berlin Zoo.
Norbert Zahmel, the zoo’s district manager, said that to mark the occasion on Friday the cubs were "given a little climbing frame that’s a bit nicer than the usual routine, with a few ice cream bombs."
"It’s fun to watch them react so well to it," he added.
Their birth weight of less than 200 grams has now increased more than a hundredfold.
Today, the twin girls each weigh around 21 kilograms.
On Friday, Leni and Lotti were seen climbing around their enclosure and eating bamboo.
Speaking about the pandas, Zahmel said that "Leni is a little quieter, a little gentler, and Lottie is just a little more adventurous, but also a little more stubborn."
Their mother Meng Meng is "an exceptional mother," he said.
"She is a very patient, loving mouse. She is the same with us," he added.
