3. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Gabriel, artist – on his piece:
"I’m particularly working on a piece for Paddington Arts, for the Junior Queen. It’s going to be on this street on Sunday, kiddies day. It’s a mermaid. If I said mermaid, everybody knows a mermaid. I could call her a siren, or whatever, but it’s a mermaid. And it’s going to be made from recycled and natural material. And it’s deliberately done with that material so that the youngsters could appreciate the natural and nontoxic material that can be used for making costumes."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Gabriel, artist – on adding more to the piece:
"Okay, what happens, at every stage, I would try it onto the wearer, the person who’s going to be wearing it. And if it’s getting too heavy, I will stop adding bits to it. Now, today I’ve got fittings. Once I fit it on them, the person, if she feels that it’s comfortable and she can move with it, and she feels she can take a little bit more, I’ll add a bit more onto it. But at the moment, it’s just the headpiece, the wings. You know, and we see where it goes after today."
(Reporter: "It depends on how strong she is.")
"It depends how strong she is and how – again, it’s mindset as well, you know, she will have to carry, you know, that side because these things are quite big. Yeah, because it’s going to be a special piece. It’s a queen, so it’s special. So they’ve got to have that mindset that, ‘Right, I’m going to carry this most of the day.’"

"I would be there, I would set up the costume for the children before they move off and then I go to the VIP and just enjoy the show."
(Reporter: "I didn’t know there was a VIP section. That’s cool.")
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s for special people. Yeah."
(Reporter: "And what is next?")
"I’ll be eating, drinking, and then when’s that’s done and all finished, I’m back in my studio here creating stuff. I mean, after that is Diwali. It’s, you know, Day of the Dead, you know, there’s just so much things, you know, nonstop."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Gabriel, artist – on the importance of passing this artistry to the new generation:
"Well it’s important for me because I’m an elder and I’ve got the skills and what I’m doing I’m passing on the skills. It’s traditional skills, everything is hand done and we’re using formulas and stuff that the kids and everybody use at school, colleges or universities and it involves a bit of science as well. That’s at my level, that’s what I work at, so I’m able to pass that on."

"The best advice I give them is to be an individual, don’t try to copy anybody else, you know, create your own style and that will get you a long way."

STORYLINE:
British artist Carl Gabriel, known for his wire bending techniques and papier mache works of art, is putting the finishing touches to his latest piece for the Notting Hill Carnival, which will take place in London this weekend.
