STORYLINE:
Demonstrators hurled rocks at Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei and his campaign caravan on Wednesday as his convoy cut through Buenos Aires province, the cradle of the country’s main left-leaning opposition movement.
Milei was unscathed, his spokesperson said, but the attack on his motorcade cut short the high-profile rally and ratcheted up tensions just days before consequential provincial elections in Buenos Aires, where more than a third of Argentines live.
The incident comes as corruption allegations threaten to entangle Milei’s inner circle, including his sister and chief of staff, Karina Milei, who was riding alongside the president and key libertarian candidates in the bed of a pickup truck when rocks started flying.
Milei was swiftly evacuated from the chaos in the city of Lomas de Zamora, a historic stronghold of the opposition Peronism movement, the amorphous populist movement that has dominated Argentine politics for some eight decades.
