“This press conference is important because Venezuela is facing the greatest threat that the continent has seen in the last 100 years. Eight military ships with 1,200 missiles and a nuclear submarine are targeting Venezuela. It is an extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral, and absolutely criminal, bloody threat. Absolutely criminal.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela:
“If Venezuela were attacked, it would immediately enter a period of armed struggle in defense of the national territory, in defense of the history and people of Venezuela, and we would constitutionally declare the republic in arms.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela:
“The (communication) channels (with the U.S.) are damaged because gunboat diplomacy is misguided and wrong, which has been imposed by president Donald Trump. Because, Mr. President, Donald Trump, you have to be careful because Marco Rubio wants to stain your hands with blood with South American, Caribbean and Venezuelan. They want to drag you into a bloodbath and stain your name, Trump, for all eternity with a massacre against the people of Venezuela, with a terrible war against South America and the Caribbean because this would be all-out war in the continent.”

STORYLINE:
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said Monday he would declare a "republic in arms" if the U.S. attacks Venezuela.

His comments at a news conference followed the U.S. boosting its maritime force in the Caribbean to combat drug cartels.

The U.S. has not indicated any planned land incursion, but Venezuela has deployed troops along its coast and border with Colombia.

Maduro called the U.S. deployment an "extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral, and absolutely criminal, bloody threat."

The U.S. Navy now has two Aegis guided-missile destroyers — the USS Gravely and the USS Jason Dunham — in the Caribbean, as well as the destroyer USS Sampson and the cruiser USS Lake Erie in the waters off Latin America.

Three amphibious assault ships — a force that encompasses more than 4,000 sailors and Marines — would be entering the region this week, a defense official told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to describe ongoing operations.

During the over two-hour new briefing, Maduro repeatedly referred to Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the "chief of war" and warned president Donald Trump to watch out because Rubio, Maduro says, wants to stain his hands with blood.
