STORYLINE:
Pop culture and music collided Sunday night on the red carpet for MTV’s VMA’s. VMA used to stand for Video Music Awards, but now the show focuses on celebrating the artists who have cultural impact on the music industry and beyond.
Ariana Grande and Sarbina Carpenter arrived and posed in front of the moonman backdrop at New York’s UBS Arena. Grande chose a strapless, black and white polka dot midi dress with puffy peplum and Carpenter in a red, lace neck high gown and light purple, fur boa.
The ceremony was hosted by rapper and actor L.L. Cool J. Lady Gaga lead the night with 12 nominations while Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Rose, Sabrina Carpenter and The Weeknd were among other top contenders.
But the real race was between Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to become the most awarded artist in VMAs history. The “The Tortured Poets Department” singer and the “Cowboy Carter” star are tied for the title of most career total VMAs, with 30 awards each. They’re also only nominated in the artist of the year category at the VMAs, so if one of them wins, she will claim victory.
Presenters for the show included Ciara, Ice Spice, Paris Hilton and Latto. First time nominees include Alex Warren, Blake Shelton, KATSEYE and Lainey Wilson, and two new categories—best Country and Best Pop Artist have been added this year.
The late Ozzy Osbourne was expected to be celebrated when some of rock’s biggest names– Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, British firebrand YUNGBLUD and Nuno Bettencourt –united to deliver a medley of Osbourne’s greatest hits, a tribute that underscores his impact on generations of musicians.
Mariah Carey received the 2025 Video Vanguard Award, Busta Rhymes received the first ever MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award, and Ricky Martin was honored with the inaugural Latin Icon Award. Both Ryhmes and Martin also performed for the crowd.
Other performers included Conan Gray, Tate McRae, Doja Cat, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Alex Warren, J Balvin, Sabrina Carpenter and sombr.
The 2025 MTV “VMAs” aired live Sunday on CBS, and was simulcast on MTV and streamed on Paramount+ in the U.S.
