"We don’t want any more recruitment than winter, and we don’t want the existence of these bases either. Now they have an excuse to invade Venezuela. What they did in Iraq was to steal their oil, and this doesn’t seem different from what happened then."

STORYLINE:
A little over a hundred demonstrators gathered at the Muñiz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on Sunday to protest the U.S. military presence on the island.

The demonstration, led by the group Madres contra la Guerra (Mothers Against War) and supported by feminist and independence organizations, comes amid concerns over the announced U.S. military presence on the island.

The United States is continuing to enhance its military presence near Venezuela to counter threats from Latin American drug cartels.

It has deployed several warships to the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Tensions escalated after a U.S. strike destroyed what President Donald Trump said was a drug-carrying boat operated by the Tren de Aragua gang.

The attack killed 11 people aboard a boat that had departed Venezuela, amid rumors of the deployment of 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico for operations targeting drug cartels.

Protesters carried banners reading "No to war" and "No to military bases" in Puerto Rico while calling attention to past environmental and health impacts of military operations in Vieques and Culebra, two islands off the coast of Puerto Rico that suffered environmental damage after being used as Navy bombing ranges.

Police maintained a security perimeter at the entrance to the base as demonstrators chanted slogans and waved Puerto Rican flags.
