STORYLINE:
Israeli offensive in and around Gaza City continued on Monday, while the health authorities in the territory said that over 64,500 Palestinians have been killed since the war erupted.
Explosions and smoke were seen in Gaza City early on Monday, where hundreds of thousands still remain despite the evacuation warnings by the army.
The Health Ministry in Gaza said the bodies of 65 people killed by Israeli strikes have been brought to hospitals over the past 24 hours.
The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants but said that about half of them are women and children.
The war started following the Hamas led attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, where 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostages.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to take control of Gaza City has outraged families of hostages and their supporters, who fear the ground offensive will further imperil the 20 out of 48 hostages in Gaza still thought to be alive.
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on social media on Sunday that Israel accepted his terms for a ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to do the same.
It was not clear precisely what those terms were.
