STORYLINE:
Close friends and family attended a funeral service for Giorgio Armani Monday in a 14th century church located within a medieval cluster near his native city of Piacenza.
More than 15-thousand mourners paid their respects to Armani during two days of public viewing at his Milan theater over the weekend.
But his funeral was kept strictly private with only close friends and family attending the service in the Church of San Martino Vescovo in the town of Rivalta, south of Milan.
Armani, one of the most recognizable names and faces in the global fashion industry, died Thursday at the age of 91.
Several dozen bystanders waited alongside the road to greet the hearse carrying Armani’s coffin as it entered the cluster of medieval buildings, which was cordoned off. One woman threw a white rose as it passed.
Armani’s remains are expected to be interred nearby in the family chapel within the town’s small cemetery, where his parents and older brother are buried.
Armani often stopped to eat at a restaurant in the medieval cluster after visiting his family’s cemetery chapel, Italian media has reported.
The Church of San Martino Vescoco was built in the 14th Century on the remains of an earlier church.
Armani was born in the nearby city of Piacenza on July 11, 1934, on the banks of the Po River.
