STORYLINE:
Tulane University undergraduate Isabella Spar has turned her family’s battle with illness into inspiration for cancer patients around the world.
Monday, Spar and her family unveiled a newly donated bell at the East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) Cancer Clinic.
"I think it’s a source of strength and really just a way to mark a part of your journey. I think it’s a very important part" says Isabella Spar, Founder of Project Bell.
Spar along with her sister, Alexa, created the organization when she was just 12 years old after watching her mother ring a bell to mark the end of radiation treatment for a brain tumor.
"In a situation where you feel so out of control, the bell gives you some control. It empowers you", Spar’s mother, Dr. Wendy Jeshion, said, holding hands with her daughter.
Monday’s event marked the 130th "Bell of Hope" that Spar and her family have donated to cancer and transplant centers across the U.S.
Project Bell has also expanded to the Caribbean and South America, giving thousands of patients the chance to celebrate recovery milestones with an exciting ritual.
