STORYLINE:
Supporters of Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro gathered Monday night in Basilia for a prayer vigil next to the condominium where he is under house arrest.
Clutching Bibles and Brazilian flags, demonstrators sang hymns, prayed and called for divine intervention, claiming the country’s highest court is acting with political bias.
“Since last week, we have been here crying out to the Lord, and the expectation is that God will intervene in our nation,” said Pastor Anderson de Jesus.
Wrapped in an Israel flag, Rita dos Passos said they were just crying for justice.
The former president is accused of leading a plot to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The verdict and the sentencing phase of his trial enters in the final stage this week, with sessions scheduled through Friday.
