STORYLINE:
Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro met with China’s President Xi Jinping Tuesday during his first official visit to China.

Montenegro’s visit came as Portugal and China mark the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership, according to Chinese state media.

During his visit, Montenegro is also scheduled to meet Premier Li Qiang and Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee Zhao Lei.

In his opening remarks, Xi praised the friendly relationships between China and Portugal, noting that Portugal was the first western European country to sign a Belt and Road cooperation document and the first eurozone member to issue renminbi-dominated bonds.

Montenegro called on China to play a greater role to “build bridges” in resolving global conflicts. He urged China to use its influence with Russia to help advance a “just and sustainable peace” in Ukraine.
