STORYLINE:
The South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday it is making efforts to bring home more than 300 South Korean workers detained following a massive immigration raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia, US last week.

The ministry’s spokesperson Lee Jaewoong said in a briefing that the government is working with the US and other parties so that the workers can depart for home as early as Wednesday in local time.

Earlier on Tuesday South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun arrived in Washington DC to meet with US authorities to finalize negotiations for the repatriation of the workers.

Also on Tuesday, about a dozen protesters gathered outside the US embassy in Seoul to denounce the US detainment of the South Korean workers and called on the suspension of South Korea’s investment in the US.

During the demonstration, the participants shouted "We don’t need the South Korea-US alliance."

US immigration authorities said Friday they detained 475 people, most of them South Korean nationals, when hundreds of federal agents raided Hyundai’s sprawling manufacturing site in Georgia where the Korean automaker makes electric vehicles.

Agents focused on a plant that is still under construction at which Hyundai has partnered with LG Energy Solution to produce batteries that power EVs.

The operation was the latest in a long line of workplace raids conducted as part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. But the one Thursday is especially distinct because of its large size and because the targeted site has been touted as Georgia’s largest economic development project.

The raid stunned many in South Korea because the country is a key US ally.
