1. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies:
"The present situation is extremely dire. I don’t think that I remember as low a point in the negotiations as I do today. It is one thing to assassinate Hamas in Gaza, it’s quite another thing, and I was shocked to the core when on the 31st July 2024 Israel assassinated the then-political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. But Tehran, of course, is a an arch enemy of Israel. Qatar is not an arch enemy of Israel. Qatar has been hosting the head of Mossad, Dedi Barnea, and Israeli delegations, security delegations, political delegations for the past 2 years. They are frequent flyers to Qatar and the dialogue was always done in good faith. There’s nothing about good faith violating the sovereignty of the state when they are mediating and putting pressure on Hamas to accept the Trump proposal. They were discussing the ceasefire."

2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies:
"The real question is what is US President Donald Trump going to do now ? Because the only way he can redeem his credibility is by imposing an end of war and imposing a ceasefire. Is he going to be able to do it on Israel?"

3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies:
"So the time has come for US President Donald Trump to draw a line on this and say to Prime Minister Netanyahu, ‘you crossed a red line, you attacked a US ally, and now we need to end the war, get all your hostages back, those who are living, those who are dead’."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies:
"In the case of Israel and Palestine, the Palestinian negotiators time and time and time again been saying that Israel is treating us like an enemy. And if you treat a prospective party to a ceasefire negotiation like an enemy and not like a party that you would like to reach an agreement with, then that lies at the core. And the other part of it is that Israel has been allowed to get away with murder everywhere. There haven’t been any consequences. There hasn’t been accountability."

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies:
"The most important thing to know is that the situation is beyond catastrophic and that President Trump has the power to end it and he should have a call with the emir of Qatar. They should agree the terms and they should impose them on both sides."
STORYLINE:
An international peace negotiator and conflict management expert says the prospects for Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire are "exteremely dire" following Israel’s attack on a Hamas leader in Doha.

Speaking from London on Wednesday, Nomi Bar-Yaacov, international negotiator and fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies, said "the time has come for US President Donald Trump to draw a line under this and say to Prime Minister Netanyahu, you crossed a red line."

According to Bar-Yaacov "the situation is beyond catastrophic" and only Donald Trump can have real impact on bringing the war between Israel and Hamas to an end.
