“We come here to pay tribute to our comrades who were practically like family to us, because we had been with some of them for several years. Today I bring you some of them in the GAP (Group of Friends of the President) and, above all, the escort that we were, those of us who were constantly with the President.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Alicia Lira, President of Group of Relatives of Executed Politicians:
“When we pass by here again, 52 years later, his (Salvador Allende’s) last words still shake us. When the cowards bombed the Moneda (Presidential Palace), when he was inside, with that dignity, with that love for his people, he spoke with a calmness that no one would have ever imagined. That they were bombing the Moneda and that flames were coming out of the windows. He left us a legacy of integrity, dignity, humanity, and the infinite love that we communists have for truth, justice, and memory."

STORYLINE:
As Chile marked the 52nd anniversary of the 1973 coup d’état that overthrew President Salvador Allende, political activists and relatives of the disappeared warned against the threat of a return to authoritarian rule.
Amid the solemn commemorations on Wednesday, Communist Party Congresswoman Lorena Pizarro, whose relative was among the thousands of people who disappeared under the military dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet, spoke about her concerns of fascism returning.
"We are commemorating 52 years. Behind us is the Palacio de la Moneda, and perhaps the clearest thing to point out is that we are in serious danger of fascism returning to rule us,” Pizarro stressed.
Pizarro’s warning comes as political tensions are heightened by a deeply polarized and tight presidential race. Polls indicate a close contest in the November 16 general election between far-right candidate José Antonio Kast and leftist Jeannette Jara, a Communist Party candidate who recently won her party’s primary.
Many on the left see a resurgent right-wing movement as a potential threat to democratic gains and social progress achieved since the end of the dictatorship.
The military coup on Sept. 11, 1973, ushered in a 17-year dictatorship that left more than 3,000 people dead or disappeared and tens of thousands imprisoned and tortured.
The anniversary is a day of national reflection, with many honoring the victims and reaffirming their commitment to human rights and democracy.
