"In the early hours of Wednesday, September 10th, numerous Russian drones violated Polish airspace. NATO’s air defenses were activated and successfully assured the defense of NATO territory. ++DIP TO WHITE++ NATO is launching Eastern Sentry to bolster our posture even further along our eastern flank. This military activity will commence in the coming days and will involve a range of assets from allies including Denmark, France, United Kingdom, Germany and others.

"Although the immediacy of our focus is on Poland, this situation transcends the borders of one nation. It will include additional enhanced capabilities. It will integrate air and ground based defenses, and it will increase information sharing amongst nations. Foremost, it will even further strengthen our posture to shield and protect the Alliance."

STORYLINE:
NATO’s top military officer on Friday launched a new operation, dubbed Eastern Sentry, to better defend the alliance’s eastern flank bordering Belarus, Russia and Ukraine following this week’s drone incident in Poland.
NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte made the announcement alongside Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich in Brussels.
"Russia’s recklessness in the air along our eastern flank is increasing in frequency," said Rutte. "Whether intentional or not, it is dangerous and unacceptable."
Rutte said Russian drones violated Polish airspace earlier this week, in what he called "the largest concentration of violations of NATO airspace as we have seen."
Multiple Russian drones crossed into Poland on Wednesday, prompting NATO to send fighter jets to shoot them down.
Russia said it did not target Poland and Moscow ally Belarus said the drones went astray because they were jammed, but European leaders have expressed certainty that the incursions were a deliberate provocation by Russia.
Eastern Sentry will incorporate NATO’s air policing and existing air and ground-based defenses with new equipment promised in the wake of the incident by France, Denmark, Germany and the U.K.
"Although the immediacy of our focus is on Poland, this situation transcends the borders of one nation," NATO’s supreme commander in Europe, U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich told reporters at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters. "What affects one ally, affects us all."
French Rafale fighter jets, Danish F-16s, a frigate and ground-based defense systems have been promised for the new effort.
