Tensions between the United States and Venezuela are rising over the deployment of American warships and fighter jets to the southern Caribbean. Last week, the U.S. launched airstrikes on several vessels in the region, killing over a dozen alleged drug traffickers. Venezuela’s authoritarian socialist president, Nicolás Maduro, has denied that his government is involved in drug trafficking and has called for civilians to mobilize and defend the country from what he calls U.S. aggression.
