STORYLINE:
Palestinians fled en masse on Tuesday as Israel launched its ground offensive in Gaza City, threatening to overwhelm the city already in ruins from nearly two years of raids and bombardment.
Vehicles strapped with mattresses and other belongings clogged a coastal road as thousands of Palestinians fled to what the Israeli army claims to be safe areas in the Central and South Gaza Strip, but hundreds of thousands more remain.
“The situation is destruction and death. Blowing up high-rise buildings. It took years for them to build, they flattened them. They left no place without destruction,” Samira Issa, who was displaced from her home in Gaza City, said.
“The situation in Gaza, even if you want us to be patient, and to endure, there is no water, or charity kitchens, no food and no life. How do you want us to be steadfast?” Nasser al-Nabieh from Gaza City said, adding that his children were killed and his house is gone.
The operation into the largest Palestinian city further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire farther out of reach.
The military wouldn’t offer a timeline for the offensive, which it says aims to “destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure,” but Israeli media suggested it could take months.
Israel rejected the allegation, calling the report “distorted and false.”
