2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Tezai, Chartered Org Representative for Saint Kateri Tekakwitha:
"You don’t have to say prayers and preach about God in the troop meetings, but what we do by showing kindness and being helpful, that’s all a part of being reverent as well. When we have our dinners and our camp outs, we’ll say a prayer. We don’t say you need to pray to Mary or to God, it’s just reverence. So we bring it all together without making it actually a focal point."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Tezai, Chartered Org Representative for Saint Kateri Tekakwitha:
"And we’ve actually, my husband as a scout master, has started a thing where each month, we have someone else from a different religion talk about what their religion is and how they can bring that more information to the scouts."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Mykhail Tezai, Boy Scout
"I’ve had several friends who don’t necessarily have a specific religion, it’s not that they’re one way or the other, but they’re open to it and I’ll have conversations with them about it. The people who I feel don’t have a religion are very curious about my religion and being Catholic and they want to know how it works and all these things about it, especially when we’re at a church event."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Roger Krone, Scouting America CEO:
"Some of our youth-serving organization partners have dropped duty to God, for instance. I would say we have discussed the importance to duty to god in our organization, but we’ve never had any serious discussion about removing it from the Scout Oath and Scout Law. And actually the duty to God is written in our bylaws. It is a fundamental organizational principle of Scouting America."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Roger Krone, Scouting America CEO:
"The decision to expand and to welcome LBGTQ and girls was kind of, I think, tied up in service to youth. And in today’s world, we wanna transform as many lives as we possibly can. And it’s a very, very complicated world today. And we just got to the point that said, frankly, if you can fill out a membership application and you have a Venmo account, you can join our organization. There is a place, we think, for every child in our organization, but what I say often, and you may have heard this from some of the religious groups, we say prayers at meals. We say prayers in campfires. We do, in our Scott Earth and Scott Law, I said, you are all welcome in our organizations. There may be, you know, certain youths or adults who are not comfortable being in our organization with the way we go about our meetings and I’m okay with that, you but I will tell you, anyone can join."

STORYLINE:
For the Boy Scouts of America — recently renamed Scouting America — the past 12 years have been arduous. Opening its programs to gays and later to girls sparked dismay in some quarters. Its 2020 bankruptcy declaration led to prolonged wrangling over compensation for thousands of men claiming they were sexually abused as scouts.
