3. SOUNDBITE (English) Astrid S. Tuminez, Utah Valley University President:
“Because of ongoing local and federal investigations, we are unable today to speak about the specifics of September 10th. And we are also doing that out of respect for the Kirk family, to whom we extend, again, our deepest condolences. We also extend our love and care for so many people who were directly affected by what happened on September 10. What we do want to show you today is the culture of UVU, and what we have been doing and will continue to do to develop and protect the safety and welfare of our students.”
4. Cutway of students admiring large U.S. flag
5. Kyle Reyes, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at UVU, during press tour, UPSOUND (English): “Today is the last day that students and employees and anybody who was at the event or on campus can reclaim their resources, or their belongings, and still receive resources of mental health support and counseling there at the alumni center. Starting tomorrow, we will transfer all mental health support. Down the hall here and around the corner, we have our Student Health Services, and we have everything, from, again, group therapy, individual sessions, crisis care and all of those things.”
6. Officer watching over courtyard behind U.S. flag
7. Kyle Reyes, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at UVU, during press tour, UPSOUND (English): “We have increased our police presence on campus that you’ll see throughout the campus. As I mentioned, care stations. And the other thing that we’ve been focusing on is our faculty support for students.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Kyle Reyes, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at UVU:
“The care station, first and foremost, are to point students to resources. And so, you see here QR codes; access to Timely Care, which is mental health support. Again, additional, a full listing of mental health resources here. And for us, more importantly it’s symbolic that no matter where you go on campus, you see a presence here and you just know there’s a whole group of us that just wants them to be successful. So, that’s it.”
11. Wide of courtyard, with U.S. flag and sheriff’s officer looking on
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Astrid S. Tuminez, Utah Valley University President:
“For me personally, as with everybody else, it is a very difficult time. And I really want you to understand that the feelings of hurt are real. The feelings are, could be complex. And I think the challenge for me and also the opportunity – I’ve said this in another context – is to focus on human connection, to focus on our core values: exceptional care, exceptional accountability, exceptional results. And to focus as a human being on the practice of love being stronger than fear.”
