France has joined Canada, Portugal, the UK, and Australia in recognizing a Palestinian state in recent days. The move aligns these Global North countries with over 140 other countries who had already supported Palestinian statehood at the UN. France – the latest G7 and Security Council member to back Palestinian statehood – has stated that it hopes a two-state solution will bring an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. So far, Germany and the US – two of Israel’s greatest allies – have refused to formally back Palestinian statehood.
