STORYLINE:
As Guinea’s referendum approaches this Sunday, for many young people, a vote in favour is not just a vote for a new constitution – it’s a vote for the country’s charismatic military leader.
The proposed constitution would give General Mamadi Doumbouya, who took power in a 2021 coup, the opportunity to run in the presidential elections which are due to be held later this year. It would also extend presidential mandates from five to seven years and create a senate, where one-third of the members would be appointed by the president.
Doumbouya led the Guinean army’s special forces unit under former President Alpha Conde, who he deposed after Conde sought and won a controversial third term in office.
He has not spoken publicly about whether he would run in December’s election, but he remains the main figure of the referendum campaign.
At Conakry’s Palace of the People, large crowds gathered Thursday night as referendum campaigning came to a close. Campaigning will not be allowed after midnight.
Tiguidanké Guirassy, 20, a recent graduate, said she will be voting Yes on Sunday because of her faith in Doumbouya.
“He inspired me because in my neighborhood, we didn’t have roads,” she said. “Now, he took care of that, we have roads. He has made a lot of progress for Guinea and I hope he will continue on this path.”
Campaigning for a No vote on the referendum has been notably absent, and the Guinean authorities have cracked down on opposition and dissent in recent months.
