In India, the question of what to do with stray dogs has become a national issue. Health ministry data shows dog bite cases nationwide jumped from 2.19 million in 2022 to nearly 3.72 million in 2024. In Delhi, cases spiked by 277% in just two years. A young girl reportedly died in a dog attack – prompting the Supreme Court this August to order all stray dogs in Delhi to be permanently put into shelters. This order was swiftly reversed, but the issue is now a highly divisive one. India’s stray dog crisis remains caught between fear and compassion, law and implementation. DW’s Manira Chaudhary reports.
