1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General:

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General:
"Following the meeting, allies issued a strong statement of solidarity and resolve. They condemned Russia’s reckless actions, which are escalatory, risk miscalculation and endanger lives. Allies affirmed yet again that our shared commitment to collective defense is unshakable. We do not want to see a continuation of this dangerous pattern by Russia, intentional or not. But we stand ready and willing to continue to defend every inch of allied territory. Our posture on land, at sea and in the air is serving us well. Our pilots are doing precisely what they are trained to do when there is a potential risk of incursion."

STORYLINE:
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte underlined the "solidarity and resolve" of member states on Tuesday, following an intrusion into Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets last week.

Estonia’s said three Russian fighter jets entered its airspace for 12 minutes on Friday without authorization, a charge that Russia has rejected.

Following a meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Council requested by Estonia, NATO allies "condemned Russia’s reckless actions, which are escalatory, risk miscalculation and endanger lives," Rutte said.

"We stand ready and willing to continue to defend every inch of allied territory," he added.

Earlier this month, NATO downed Russian drones over Poland in the first direct encounter with Moscow since the war in Ukraine began.

It jolted leaders across Europe, raising questions about how prepared the alliance is against growing Russian aggression.
