STORYLINE:
Scores of Palestinians gathered in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday to express their support as more countries announced their recognition of a Palestinian state.
On Sunday, the U.K., Canada and Australia recognized Palestinian statehood, with France doing so on Monday at the start of a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanizing support for a two-state solution to the Mideast conflict.
More nations are expected to follow, in defiance of Israel and the United States.
"This marks a historic step toward achieving justice. Today, the ball is in our court to reorganize our ranks and build on this pivotal development in order to firmly establish the State of Palestine on the ground," said Jibril Rajoub, Secretary of the Fatah Central Committee.
However, with the ongoing war in Gaza, the news is bittersweet.
"It’s a step in the right direction and not a bad one, but it’s not enough. It hasn’t stopped the massacres or the bloodshed, nor has it ended the thirst and hunger in Gaza," said Ramallah resident Saeed Anjas.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement in the U.N. General Assembly hall received loud applause from the more than 140 leaders in attendance.
The Palestinian delegation, including its U.N. ambassador, Riyad Mansour, could be seen standing and applauding as the declaration was made.
Until recently, major Western nations had declined to recognize a Palestinian state, saying one could only come about through negotiations with Israel.
More than 145 U.N. member nations now recognize the state of Palestine.
