“Yesterday when President Trump had the announcement on autism, I was excited to see what the government was going to do to help families affected by autism. When I heard that he set acetaminophen was the cause, I was a little scared and a little sad because as a mom of a child with autism, I felt like maybe I was being blamed for that.”

“When I was pregnant with my son with autism, I didn’t really even know what autism was. And so as I think back during that time period of when I was pregnant and I try to remember if I took acetaminophen, I actually have no idea. It was 22 years ago. But it starts to make me wonder what did I do wrong and what could I have done better during that time period.”

“And I think that if we can place blame on the families or something that a family did, we hurt that family and we hurt their abilities to go out into public. We hurt their abilities, to go to the grocery store and not be scared that their kid is gonna make a noise. We hurt their abilities to go to the library and look for books.”

“They didn’t really talk about how they were going to help families already affected by autism. And the government is cutting funding for Medicaid, it’s cutting funding for special education, it is cutting for therapies. And these families, and my family in particular, utilizes those services to help their children be the best that they can be and be contributors to society, to be taxpayers, to get jobs.”

STORYLINE:
When Rachel Deaton heard that President Donald Trump was going to make an announcement on autism, she said she was excited to see what the government would do to help families affected by the condition. But the president’s remarks were not what she expected.
“I was a little scared and a little sad because, as a mom of a child with autism, I felt like maybe I was being blamed for that,” Deaton said.
President Donald Trump on Monday used the platform of the presidency to promote unproven and in some cases discredited ties between Tylenol, vaccines and autism as his administration announced a wide-ranging effort to study the causes of the complex brain disorder.
Responding to Trump’s warnings, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine said it still recommends Tylenol as an appropriate option to treat fever and pain during pregnancy.
