STORYLINE:
North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui will visit China on Saturday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed Thursday.
Guo told a daily news briefing that Choe’s four-day visit is at the invitation of Wang Yi, Chinese foreign minister and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee.
The visit follows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s trip to Beijing earlier this month to attend a massive military parade marking the end of World War II.
Experts say Kim’s rare foreign trip was likely intended to boost his leverage ahead of a potential resumption of nuclear talks with the United States.
