STORYLINE:
Heavy smoke was seen rising in the Gaza Strip’s skyline on Thursday, as Israel’s military offensive in the embattled territory continued.
Israel launched a major offensive earlier this month aimed at occupying Gaza City, the territory’s largest, which has already suffered heavy damage from previous raids and bombardment.
Israel says the operation is aimed at pressuring Hamas to surrender and return the remaining 48 hostages taken during its Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war.
Israel believes around 20 of the captives are alive.
More than 300,000 people have fled, but up to 700,000 are still there, many because they can’t afford to relocate.
Israel’s ongoing retaliatory offensive has killed more than 65,000 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
It doesn’t say how many were civilians or combatants, but says women and children make up around half the fatalities.
Multiple hospitals in famine-stricken Gaza City have been forced to shut down as Israel forces advance.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage.
