"It’s about tribal politics really, so the fact that the current MP has been there for 32 years is all about the party, the Conservative Party, and the fact they’ve been able to concentrate their support here for all that time. What’s breaking down is the fact, as I’ve said, is the state of the country, the disenchantment with the Conservative Party, and then a party like mine that’s challenging very hard and people getting behind one of the parties to remove the Conservatives and vote for change. That’s really what’s going on here."

“What we saw in the local elections, which we had earlier this year was that in places where voting Lib Dem (Liberal Democrats) did most damage to the government, Labour voters were very happy to vote Lib Dem. I mean, not all of them, but enough of them to really hurt the Conservatives. In places where voting Labour was what you needed to do to hurt the Conservatives, Lib Dem voters were quite happy to vote Labour. And so the Conservative Party faces this absolutely awful ‘pincer’ movement. In fact ‘pincer’ probably doesn’t describe it painfully enough because it’s coming from multiple directions.”

"This has been a Tory (Conservative) seat forever, for 32 years, longer than I’ve been alive. And so this is actually quite an exciting election for me because this is the first time that actually Lib Dems might win and actually my vote might count towards something because in the past I’ve felt that way. Even though I have voted, I’ve felt like my vote isn’t important because it’s always going to be Tory. So I am quite excited about this election, I’m excited at the prospect of someone new. I mean I think 32 years in any job is too long. You surely have run out of ideas by now."
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony McGarel-Groves, retiree who moved to North Cotswolds area from London:
"I find amongst my friendship group that a lot of people have traditionally been one-nation Tories without really thinking about it because that’s the way their parents voted, etcetera, etcetera. But actually the Tory party has moved so far to one extreme that they now feel it doesn’t represent them, their interests, or their children’s interests and therefore I won’t be at all surprised if a lot of them don’t vote, or they might just hold their nose and vote Lib Dem."
