"Sadly, we know that they all too often develop aggressive breast cancer at younger ages. We know from our modelling because for the very first time we could model health outcomes specific to Black women and what we find is that benefit that we talked about for screening all women starting at age 40 every other year, has even more benefit for women who are Black and we recognise that shift to starting at age 40 and screening every other year is an important first step. But it’s not enough to reduce the health disparities that we continue to observe."

"We know that women with dense breast have a higher risk for developing breast cancer, and we do know that mammography doesn’t work as well for women with dense breast and so they are calling again for additional research to understand whether and how additional screening, whether it be with MRI, ultrasound or something else might be beneficial for helping reduce that higher risk for breast cancer and detecting breast cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage."

American women should get screened for breast cancer every other year starting at age 40, according to an influential medical task force which says the nudge toward earlier screening aims to tackle two growing problems.
One is the increasing incidence of breast cancer among women in their 40s and the other is the higher breast cancer death rate among Black women compared to white women.
STORYLINE:
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that American women aged 40 and older should get screened for breast cancer every other year.
