STORYLINE:
Thousands of workers took to the streets of downtown Santiago Thursday to protest the government’s campaign promises that they think have not been fulfilled regarding education and healthcare.

Unions from various sectors joined the protest, which is part of a national strike called by the Central Unitary Workers’ Union (CUT).

The workers’ union’s main demand is for the government to reduce the work week to 40 hours and the collective bargaining project, which seeks to establish common working conditions instead of individual negotiations.

But another of the shared main demands of the mobilization is to pressure for the approval of the so-called "living wage" proposal, which would increase the minimum wage to 725,000 pesos (about 760 US dollars) from the current 510,636 pesos (about 535 US dollars).

The initial rally in Santiago brought together nearly 3,000 people in the central Plaza de los Héroes, while in Valparaíso, hundreds of workers occupied the streets surrounding the National Congress, restricting traffic for several hours.

Protests and strikes have also been reported in various parts of Chile, from Puerto Montt in the far south to Iquique in the north.
