STORYLINE:
After U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly backed off his tariffs on most nations for 90 days while escalating his trade war with China, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Thursday that the tension remained problematic for his country, warning that "it will impact our economy."
"We will continue to have good bilateral and excellent trading, investment relations with the United States. At the same time, our position in ASEAN is to ensure that our relations, particularly with china… remain strong and formidable," said Anwar during his closing remarks at 12th Finance Ministers Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Kuala Lumpur.
In the wake of Trump’s decision to pause the implementation of the wide-ranging tariffs, Amir Hamzah Aizan, Malaysia’s second minister of finance, said Thursday that ASEAN was not planning any immediate retaliatory tariffs of its own.
He said that the bloc – made up of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia – "reaffirms its continued commitment to open inclusive and rule-based multilateral trading systems" and would look to negotiate solutions.
"We stand ready to work constructively with all partners, including the United States, to find balanced, forward-looking solutions that support a more resilient and sustainable global economy," he said.
"ASEAN commits to not impose any retaliatory measures in response to the U.S. tariffs," Amir Hamzah added.
