STORYLINE:
Thailand was one of many countries drawing breath on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to a hike in tariffs on most nations.
Thailand was one of the hardest hit, with a 36% tariff levied on its exports.
Countries subject to the pause will now face a blanket rate of 10%, at least for the next 90 days.
Trump said that more than 75 countries are negotiating on trade and not retaliating against his latest increases in tariffs.
News of the pause sent stock markets in Asia soaring.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nikorndej Balankura, welcomed the announcement.
“We hope, certainly we hope the two countries will resolve this situation and come to a win-win solution with a mutual understanding within that 90 days,” he told reporters in Bangkok.
