"This is the first major retrospective in London on Cartier in 30 years. We’ve got 350 spectacular objects showcasing the creativity, the craftsmanship and the legacy of Cartier. One of my favourite highlights is our opening jewel, which is the Manchester Tiara. It’s a spectacular diamond-set jewel with big openwork heart-shaped motifs, really like a crown, it’s enormous. And it was made in 1903 in Paris by Cartier for an American heiress, Consuelo Isnaga, who married into the British aristocratic Manchester family. And this tells us the beginning of our Cartier story, where we see the three brothers, who are the grandsons of the founder, opening their main ‘temples of Cartier’, we call them, in Paris, London and New York, so it’s seeing us forward into the Cartier story. It’s also a permanent object in our V&A collection, so we’re very proud of it."

"This was a tiara, all in diamonds, made in 1902 for the Countess of Essex for the coronation of Edward VII. It was also worn at the coronations of the late Queen in 1953, but more recently worn by Rihanna for a photoshoot in 2016. So, it’s really how the tiara has been modernised for a futuristic vision."

STORYLINE:
Royalty, Hollywood actors and music stars all have one thing in common – they like to sparkle.

And, throughout history, much of this elite, glittering jewellery has been designed and made by French brand Cartier.

Now there’s a chance for people to get a glimpse of these intricately arranged and wearable precious gemstones at new exhibition in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

There are over 350 objects to view, including a brooch commissioned and worn by Elizabeth II and a tiara worn by Rihanna.

The extensive exhibition – which is collated from Cartier and the V&A’s archives plus King Charles’ Royal Collection – traces the French Maison back to founder Louis Francios Cartier at the turn of the 20th Century.

His three grandsons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, then pushed the brand onto the world stage by setting up in Paris, London and New York and soon became the go to Maison for glittering events and special occasions.

For example, Cartier made more tiaras than ever before for the occasion of George VI and Elizabeth’s coronation in 1937.

Helen Molesworth, the Senior Jewellery Curator at the V&A and lead curator for Cartier, said one of the main highlights of the exhibition is the Manchester Tiara as it links to the house’s history.

“It’s a spectacular diamond set jewel with big openwork heart-shaped motifs, really like a crown, it’s enormous. And it was made in 1903 in Paris by Cartier for an American heiress, Consuelo Yznaga, who married into the British aristocratic Manchester family," she said.

"This tells us the beginning of our Cartier story, where we see the three brothers, who are the grandsons of the founder, opening their main ‘temples of Cartier’, we call them, in Paris, London and New York.”
