9. SOUNDBITE (French) Monsignor Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Rector, Notre Dame Cathedral:
"Not only are we six years after the fire, but we are, in particular, more than four months after the reopening of the cathedral and since those four months of the cathedral’s reopening, more than 3.5 million people have come to visit it, have come to meditate there, have come to pray there. And today, my joy is to allow all these faithful who will come and who continue to follow one another inside the cathedral to find their cathedral again. Notre Dame is not simply a stone building. It is a building in which, for generations and generations over centuries, people have prayed. And I rejoice that once again the bells of Notre Dame ring to announce that Christ has conquered death and that love can triumph in the very heart of this world."

11. SOUNDBITE (French) Monsignor Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Rector, Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral:
"Before the fire, in other words, some five years ago, there was a flow of about 20,000 pilgrims and visitors per day. Today, we are at a rate of thirty thousand. That is to say, the figures we announced before the reopening of having 14 million visitors and pilgrims each year are figures that will undoubtedly be reached."

13. SOUNDBITE (French) Monsignor Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Rector, Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral:
"Today is the veneration of the crown of thorns. All day, the priests are there for confession. This evening, there will be a Way of the Cross this afternoon, one on the forecourt shortly. And it is this entire experience that we want to share with those who come from all over the world to see Notre Dame."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Kate Naughton, Australian Tourist from Brisbane:
"I watched it burn and it broke my heart from my home in Brisbane, Australia, because I thought I still haven’t been there. It was one of my life goals to be here at Notre Dame and to be here at Easter, a time where we celebrate new life. It couldn’t be more meaningful for me and my husband because 24 years ago we made a big decision. It was either have a fourth baby or go to Paris. And I think what’s so special about today for us – here we are and our 4th baby is 24 years old, holding the fort at home in Brisbane, Australia, so yeah, very, very special for us to be here, thank you."

STORYLINE:
Four months after its long-awaited reopening, Notre Dame Cathedral welcomed worshippers and tourists alike on Friday for an emotional Easter ceremony centered on the Crown of Thorns, a circular band of branches encased in a golden tube and one of Catholicism’s most revered relics.

The ritual, held during Holy Week, included liturgical chants, candlelight, and a solemn procession of clerics, with the Paris Archbishop carrying the Crown of Thorns through the alleys of the cathedral before the public could approach the crown during the veneration ceremony.

Tourists queued up, waiting to enter the renovated Gothic landmark.
