STORYLINE:
Italy’s and Egypt’s top diplomats discussed the war in the Gaza Strip, the security situation in Libya and other topics during a meeting in Cairo on Thursday.
Minister Antonio Tajani of Italy said his country was " ready to do everything necessary to facilitate a ceasefire that puts an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people and the suffering of the Israeli people."
"Our goal is to achieve peace, with the possibility for the Palestinian people to realize their dream of having a state that recognizes Israel and is recognized by Israel," he added.
Israel ended its ceasefire with Hamas and renewed its air and ground war over a month ago.
It has sealed off Gaza’s 2 million Palestinians from all food and other imports since the beginning of March to pressure Hamas to release hostages.
Hamas has said it will only release the remaining 59 captives, 24 of whom are believed to be alive, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and a full Israeli withdrawal. Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas.
On Libya, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed his country’s position that there should be parliamentary and presidential elections in the North African country as soon as possible.
The new U.N. envoy to Libya has underscored the volatile security situation in oil-rich Libya, with political rivals and armed groups competing for control over territory and a recent surge in hate speech.
Abdelatty said Egypt rejects the presence of "foreign presence on Libyan territory" and that it was "of utmost importance also to dismantle the militias in order to achieve safety and stability in Libya."
Libya plunged into chaos after an uprising toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
The country split, with rival administrations in the east and west backed by rogue militias and foreign governments.
