LEADIN:

Frosty Martian skies, glowing nebulae, and distant, star-filled galaxies all feature in a new set of images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Released by NASA to mark 35 years of it in orbit, they showcase the telescope’s legacy in the mission to learn more about the cosmos.

STORYLINE:

35 years ago, NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, ushering in a revolutionary era of cosmic exploration.

Perched above Earth’s atmosphere, Hubble has captured more than 1.6 million observations, revealing the universe in unprecedented clarity.

To mark this anniversary, NASA has released a series of new images, based on captures from the telescope.

From planets in our solar system to star-forming regions and distant galaxies, the images are as spectacular as ever.

Among them, the glowing wings of planetary nebula NGC 2899, propelled by stellar winds and radiation.

A flocculent spiral galaxy, NGC 5335, reveals its starry arms in remarkable detail.

Dark clouds of gas in the Rosette Nebula, a vast nursery of stars, stretch across the frame, 5,200 light-years away.

And Mars, seen near opposition, is dusted with thin water-ice clouds that give it a frosty glow in ultraviolet light.

Over the decades, Hubble has peered deep into the cosmos, detecting black hole jets, colliding asteroids, and even the most distant star ever observed, whose light travelled nearly 13 billion years.

Its deep field images have unveiled thousands of galaxies and helped scientists refine the age and expansion rate of the universe.

The telescope’s longevity has allowed astronomers to revisit cosmic targets over time.

Each brings a different view.
