It was pure speculation thereafter and living in Rome in those months in the month of the conclave you’d see all kinds of speculation in the press.”

“I was up close and personal to him while he was in Rome because at his installation, the mass that he began is pontificate, I happen to be one of about 200 priests there to distribute communion at St. Peter Square and was the second row of seating directly in front of the altar where he presided at his first Mass as Pope. So that was a thrilling experience.”

“So I happened to be there among, I don’t know, several hundred priests. And by the luck of the draw the seat I was given was right at the end of a row of seats and therefore had a vantage point like nobody else could unless you’re on the side as the pope walked by. And I snapped this photo as he was walking by to go to the altar to begin the celebration of Mass.”

“Overwhelmed with pride. We are not supposed to be proud. Overwhelmed with pride. Humility. As someone who modeled, you know, what it means to be faithful. A faithful we call disciple of Jesus Christ. A faithful Catholic. A committed Catholic. Someone who lived a lifestyle as a Jesuit that was a model for all of us. So this overwhelming sense the first Jesuit in history to be called to be the Pope. It was absolutely thrilling.”
