STORYLINE:
Residents in Crimea reacted on Friday to a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump who said in an interview that “Crimea will stay with Russia.”

“What Trump has said so far, there is little hope for this. He says a lot, but does very little,” one local who gave only his first name, Alexander, said.

Another local agreed with Trump about Crimea but expressed doubts that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine was possible.

“Of course, I would like there to be peace. But there are such people in Ukraine, with whom it is unlikely that anything will be resolved in terms of peace,” Yelena Kovalyova said.

Trump made the comments in a Time magazine interview conducted on Tuesday and published on Friday.

“Crimea will stay with Russia. (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy understands that, and everybody understands that it’s been with them for a long time”, he said.

Crimea is a strategic peninsula along the Black Sea in southern Ukraine.

It was seized by Russia in 2014, while President Barack Obama was in office, years before the conflict began in 2022.

The Russian takeover followed large protests set off by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who refused to sign an association agreement with the European Union.
