1. SOUNDBITE (English) John J. Durham, U.S. Attorney Eastern District of New York:
"From the moment he declared his candidacy for Congress, Santos leveraged his campaign for his own enrichment and financial benefit. He did this by targeting specific supporters and constituents. He saw them as easy marks and he made them victims of his fraud. Santos’ victims were real people and they suffered real losses. He went so far as to seek out elderly people who suffered from cognitive impairment and dementia."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) John J. Durham, U.S. Attorney Eastern District of New York:
"Santos’ blatant corruption is an affront to our electoral process, our representative government and the people of New York’s third congressional district. But today, and finally, Santos has been accountable, held accountable, for his years of fraud, deceit and theft. He’s going to federal prison, and he’s going be punished for his staggering fraud."
STORYLINE:
Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos has been sentenced to over seven years in prison. He sobbed on Friday as he heard his 87-month sentence.

The New York Republican pleaded guilty last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos admitted he deceived donors and stole the identities of nearly a dozen people to fund his congressional campaign.

He served less than a year in Congress before being expelled in 2023 after his lies and fraud were uncovered.

Prosecutors sought a seven-year prison sentence for Santos. His lawyers had called for two years behind bars.
