"So Dawn consists of 1,000 top end GPUs networked together with a very fast network. To give you some idea of how fast, Dawn’s equivalent to 65,000 top-end laptops. And the network performance, that groups all that power together, is equivalent to 1.5 million households broadband going full speed all the time."

8. Close of wiring inside Dawn
9. Wide of Dawn’s cabinet and water cooling hoses
10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr Paul Calleja, director of research computer services, University of Cambridge
"Compared to a GPU that you’d have in your desktop, each one of these is probably around ten times faster, sucks ten times the power. So each GPU in Dawn consumes 750W of power. The whole of Dawn consumes a megawatt of power. That’s 1000kW. So that’s equivalent to a thousand kettles boiling full time. Your desktop at home would probably draw 500W."

11. Wide of Dawn logo on the door housing the cabinets
12. Wide tilt down of power cables entering Dawn
13. Close tilt down of same
14. Close of water filtration system tilts up to water pipes entering
15. Pull focus of water pipes
16. Close of blue hose with cold water entering Dawn, with red pipe taking the hot water away
17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr Paul Calleja, director of research computer services, University of Cambridge
"Most of that heat is concentrated on the chip. So we have a thousand chips. Almost like a thousand kettles. The only way we can cool that is with liquid onto the chip. So we have specialist liquid cooling that puts cold water on every chip. Hot water comes off, that goes outside with the heat exchange to the air, cold water comes back in. So the cooling of these systems is extremely specialist because the heat density is so high, we can’t cool it with air like in your PC, you blow air over your processor – that’s enough. We can’t cool this by air, we cool it on liquid that goes onto the chip in a special heat sink that has water inside it."

23. SOUNDBITE: (English) Bill McGough, PhD student using Dawn to detect cancer from images, Department of Oncology, University of Cambridge
"This is work that will impact the future greatly. It will democratize access to early cancer detection. But that is only possible with supercomputers that are available at universities. And Dawn is one of the best, if not the best in the UK. And so we’re completely privileged."

"A lot of the focus is on AI, because it promises to do things you couldn’t do before and do things much more cost effectively than you could do before."
