"I met him more than once. The first thing I remember is that I was very happy, but not because I met the pope. I met a man who was full of smiles, very friendly. My wife and I went together, and he was very, very friendly, with a big smile and funny jokes, just chatting about this and that."

“We said to him, ‘Well, Holy Father, let’s get you some new glasses,’ because the ones he had were really old, they must had been 20 or 25 years-old. And the pope said, ‘No, no, I have these glasses, they’re fine for me, I don’t want to spend money for no reason. Let’s just put the new lenses in these glasses.’ And we said, ‘OK, let’s put the lenses in these glasses.’ Obviously, that’s what we did. Then, as he was leaving the shop, before going out, he turned around and said, ‘remember, though, I want to pay for the lenses.”

STORYLINE:
Days after his death, the memory of Pope Francis remains vivid in the places he used to visit personally.
Some of them—tailors, opticians, and ice cream makers—became acquaintances, almost friends, of the Argentine pontiff after years of loyal service.
“I met a man who was full of smiles, very friendly,” said Raniero Mancinelli, tailor to the last three popes and the one who sold the very basic pectoral cross that Francis has been wearing for the past few decades.
Unlike other popes, Francis wanted “things that are very simple, very practical, not expensive,” according to Mancinelli, who also sold Bergoglio a cardinal’s sash shortly before the conclave that elected him pope began.
On that occasion, after learning the price of the garment, Pope Francis let himself go and in “a very practical and sincere way" said, "Raniero, you’re a bit of a thief, you’re a bit expensive," recalled Mancinelli.
Pope Francis was known for his basic dressing style, his humble lifestyle, and his aversion to luxury.
He moved around Rome in an ordinary hatchback and made surprise visits to his favorite shops to either change eyeglass lenses or shoe insoles—or even to buy some music records.
