STORYLINE:
Buses carrying Druze from Syria crossed into the Israeli controlled area of the Golan Heights on Friday, in a trip by the embattled minority to visit a religious shrine located inside Israel.
This marks the second visit by Syrian Druze to holy sites in Israel, following a similar trip last month and the fall of the Syrian regime in December.
A group of Druze from the Israeli-controlled Golan heights welcomed the Syrian Druze at the crossing point while carrying Druze flags and chanting in Arabic, “Greetings to those men, greetings to your honour, welcome."
The Druze are one of the Middle East’s most insular religious sects, beginning as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.
Most Druze religious practices are shrouded in secrecy, with outsiders not allowed to convert.
Israel said during the last visit that it is supporting the minority in a country now ruled by Islamists.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed it in a move that is only recognized by the United States.
The rest of the international community considers it occupied territory.
