5. SOUNDBITE (English) Tyree Arso, Senior, Eleanor McMain Secondary School:
"I once had a mentor and he told me music starts becoming ineffective when you make it about yourself so I just try to think that the songs are not about me. It’s about the person who wrote the song centuries back and it’s about getting the message to the people in the audience that needs to hear it. So when I stop being personal, I’m able to take the nervousness off me and have fun."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Tyree Arso, Senior, Eleanor McMain Secondary School:

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Chloe Bailey, Senior, Eleanor McMain Secondary School:

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Chloe Bailey, Senior, Eleanor McMain Secondary School:
"Not only do I get to make myself proud, my parents proud, I get to make the whole world proud and have a look of how beautiful it is to see Black people and Black children thriving. I love doing this and it’s a big opportunity for me, big opportunity for anybody that’s doing this, so it’s a blessing."

STORYLINE:
The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is known for hosting some of the most famous jazz, funk and rock acts in the world every spring.

Yet it’s also a key showcase for lifting up talent that isn’t yet well-known: local schoolchildren.

Nowhere is that young talent more evident than in the festival’s famed Gospel Tent, which this year will feature five choirs from area high schools.

They’re not the only young performers at the festival, with other stages for example featuring local jazz ensembles.

But the Gospel Tent stands out for having a particularly strong history of showcasing for Louisiana students and thus setting the stage for the next generation of talent.

Senior Chloe Bailey says it’s a blessing to be able to perform at such a big event.

"Not only do I get to make myself proud, my parents proud, I get to make the whole world proud", she said.
