1. SOUNDBITE (English) Trisha Thomas, The Associated Press: ++PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 2 AND 3++
"This is the last day of Pope Francis’ lying in state. The Vatican says, as of around midday 150,000 people have passed in front of his coffin and there are thousands more waiting here in line. The Vatican says that they’ll have to close the line, stop the line at 5 p.m. and then use the next two hours to get the last people through before they close the Basilica entirely for the ritual of closing the coffin. There will only be a few people at that ritual. That’s where they will put a white veil over the Pope’s face and various items in his coffin before closing it. The Vatican is already gearing up for the funeral ceremony tomorrow. They are expecting 135 delegations, 50 heads of state, including U.S. President Donald Trump, kings, queens, princes, and many, many leaders, many people. About 250,000 faithful, maybe even more, are expected. So it’s going to be a huge event, massive security. Following the funeral, there will be a procession with the body in its casket in a vehicle across Rome, about six kilometers, to the St. Mary Major Basilica where he would like to be buried. He chose to be buried there and waiting for him there will be 40 people, 40 people from humble backgrounds. There will be victims of sex trafficking, homeless people, prisoners given special leave, some trans people. Each one of the 40 people will be holding a white rose for Pope Francis."
